Worms are one of the known constant sources of fertilizers and nutrition for garden plants. You may like to have your own worm pouch so that you can supplement nutrition’s when it is required. The best way is to make your own worm pouch. It isn’t tough really!
You need a piece of “shade- cloth” to make a worm pouch. Cut it in appropriate size and then sow both sides together. You need to spare the ends as the worm pouch should look like a tube with both the ends open.
Now you need to fill the pouch with worm food. You may fill this tube with kitchen waste also. In any case you must avoid feeding citrus food remains and onions specifically. Worms have a special disliking for these items. Chopping the food items would further facilitate worms consume this stuff far easily. You may use some newspaper or cardboard which is already wet and add this to the worm pouch. And finally, you may pick the worms and put them in to this pouch.
Composting worms are also available at garden stores now days. You should prefer these worms as far as possible. With composting worms you can put them directly in to the worm pouch.
Finally, once you have done all that you should fold the both ends of this worm pouch (tube) and your worm pouch is thus ready.
While applying worms to the plants in your garden you should understand that it is always better to place them at the base of the young plants. This way worms supplement to the plants as constant source of fertilizers and nutrition. Root zones of plants receive these nutrients when water passes through the castings. Worm castings are generally good for all types of plants.
Using shade- cloth is really necessary as it facilitates worms to move in all directions in to the topsoil. Composting worms generally like to stay in close proximity to the food source. Such a worm pouch has an added advantage. Since it is wrapped up and therefore other problem creating objects like cockroaches and flies never get a chance.
A weekly replenishment of these worm pouches with food stuff would be sufficient.
