Top 7 Tips to Apply Fertilizer in Your Garden and Lawn

  • Applying fertilizerPrior to applying fertilizer, it is very much important to check the soil condition. Soil must be moist enough. You should water the soil a little more and then start applying fertilizer. This enhanced level of moisture will help the fertilizer move down in to the plant’s root zone easily. If you do not make the soil sufficiently moist then the fertilizer would more likely stay on the top of the soil and could easily be blown away or simply washed away.
  • Weather plays the most important role in deciding the best time to apply fertilizer to the plants. I would advise you to have a close watch over the weather first. If the weather forecast warns you about a heavy rainfall, you should never think of applying fertilizer. Too much of sprinkling of water is almost equal to the heavy rainfall when comparing their effects. Such heavy rainfalls or extreme watering by sprinkler will take all the nutrients away from the plant’s root zone.
  • Quantity of fertilizer is another major issue. Use only minimal quantity of fertilizer at one time. Even this minimal quantity should be applied slowly and in phased manner with a fixed frequency. For instance, you can apply one pond of fertilizer ten times a year rather than applying all ten pounds at one time or even five pounds twice in a year.
  • Fertilizer SpreaderUsing a fertilizer spreader is always better. I would recommend that you must use one of the best quality fertilizer spreader available. Calibrate the spreader first, as it will help you determine how much fertilizer it should discharge in a particular area. You must learn well to operate the fertilizer spreader and I suggest that you should follow all the instructions related to its operation.
  • Spreading the fertilizer in a right manner is extremely vital. Spreading in your lawn for example would need to cover all ends of your lawn first. You should spread while traversing forth and back across the rest of the area of your lawn. While taking back and forth traverses, you should also ensure that the spreader is releasing only half of the recommended quantity of fertilizer.
  • As soon as you are about to reach the last traverse you must put the spreader off. This will help you save power and you can avoid excess-application of fertilizer as well.
  • Disposing the waste is the last but the most important step of fertilizing process. Empty fertilizer bags or containers are really dangerous and poisonous. You must keep them away from the easy reach of children specifically. There are government approved disposal norms, rules, and methods for disposing such wastes. I strongly recommend that as a responsible gardener you must study the well first and then follow the instructions wisely. You will help the environment in a great way.
