Soil is one such subject, which needs maximum attention when it is referred to gardening. Soil science covers a vast variety of topics. You do not need to be a soil scientist first to be gardener but some important aspects related to the soil are of great pertinence.Quality of soil in your garden will be the sole responsible factor for determining the requirement of specific types of fertilizers. You must know the soil type in your garden. The best way to know that is to have a soil test. Results of such a soil test will also determine the nutrients needed as soil supplements.
Look out for the resources available in your nearby area first. If you are in the close vicinity of a botanical garden, you can always contact an expert for all guidance’s. Locally functioning government’s agriculture or horticulture offices would be of great help for you as well. Try to locate some natural resources conservation service (NRCS) or a cooperative state research, education, and extension service (CSREES) office in your locality. It will guide you well to approach one of the soil testing facilities to get the soil tested.
Some of the local fertilizer dealers could also be good sources of background information for you. However, you must ensure that the person is well acquainted with soil aspects and knows quite well about the subject.
Once you have the results of soil test you will be at an advantage with your own understanding about various gardening aspects. Soil test analysis based on the correct soil sampling will reveal the type of plants that would be most suitable for your garden. In addition to that, various nourishment requirements of the plants in your garden will also be handy with you.
As a general principle, you should have the soil tested once in three years period. However, I would also advise you to consult an expert horticulturist, soil scientists, or an agriculturist to have a balanced opinion in this regard.
