Garden WateringA gardener must know all the “watering techniques.” Application of the most suitable watering technique would be more dependent on the type of soil in your garden or lawn. Therefore you need to understand the nature of soil first and then the best applicable technique in a particular set of soil conditions.Following tips would be of immense help for you.

  • Loosening of the soil is important. You must ensure this well before you start watering the soil in your lawn or garden. Around the growing plants, the loosening is even more beneficial. Plants will be able to extract the nutrients from the water with much ease if soil is sufficiently loose. Loosening of the soil also increases the rate of absorption of water.
  • Mulch plays an important role in deriving the maximum advantages from watering. Cultivating and proper mulching will ultimately reduce the rate of erosion and rate of evaporation benefitting the plant’s growth. You should always ensure placing a layer of two inches thickness over the soil surface above the root area.
  • If the soil in your garden or lawn contains clay in good proportion then you must treat it well before watering. Organic materials or the peat moss would be best to mix with such soil type. Adding compost would serve the purpose of organic material. It is important to loosen the soil and you should use a spade for this. Rate of absorption of water is extremely low in case of clay soil and therefore while watering you should be fast enough because the soil will not absorb water after some time.
  • For sandy soil, also you need to ensure applying right watering techniques. Sandy soil generally requires supplements like organic materials. Such supplementation is vital because it helps soil retaining sufficient water. If you do not add organic materials to the sandy soil, the water will run off quickly and as a result, plants will not get their sufficient share of water.
  • For watering purposes, the loamy soil is the best choice. Loamy soil is in fact is a well-proportioned mix of sandy soil, slay, and silt. This mixture, the loamy soil, ensures quick and best absorption of water. The water retention capacity of the loamy soil is more than enough to store water for plants to use for their growth.
