Tree PeoniesThe beauty and elegance of tree peonies is simply beyond any comparison. Just imagine almost six feet high plants loaded with a hundred large blowsy blooms of snow white, pink, purple, and lemon yellow flowers covering a prominent space in your garden! Your visitors just cannot pass without praising your sense of gardening with love. Even a single bloom of tree peonies spreads tonnes of happiness around with its silky petals cupped around a central boss of golden yellow stamens.

Cultivation of tree peonies dates back to almost 2000 years from now. It was first spotted in China as a wild plant that grows in rocky places and amid tough climatic conditions with extreme temperature variance.

Tree peonies come in many varieties. There are single and double varies with a range of several colours. If you know how to plant them properly, you will never be troubled with much caring and protecting the plant. It is really less demanding and easy to grow plant.

Most suitable growing conditions for the tree peonies include sunny pot with rich, well-drained soil. Nature of the soil should not be strongly acidic. Meaning thereby, the pH of the soil should not be above 5.5 normally. This type of soil would prevent water logging. Planting at optimum depth is extremely essential for the healthy growth of the plant.

If you are interested in the Japanese peonies then you must ensure planting with the graft union at almost 15cm deep in to the soil. Such peonies are generally grafted on to herbaceous rootstock.

If you can feed the plant with organic fish, blood, and bone mixture, it will grow even healthier. Every year during spring season, you must prune tree peonies with removing dead wood and other remains of previous year’s growth. Caring the plant with these small steps would make you feel happy round the year with deep-cut foliage

You have umpteen tree peonies varieties to pick your favourites from.” Rocks Variety (Paeonia Rockii) has a typical blackcurrant blotch at the base of pure white petals. It is one of the most favoured varieties of the tree peonies. Genetically engineered hybrid varieties, as P.Suffruticosa give you even more range of choices. It comes in shades of pink to chocolate covering a wide range of colours. If you like, rich purple then go for “cardinal Vaughan” and if you love fresh yellow then pick the “P.Ludlowii” varieties. “Golden Isles” and “P. X Lemoinei (High Noon) are the canary blooms.

When you are selecting any double variety, you must know that the weight of the flowers is a problematic issue .Rains would cause then to bend down. One of the best possible solutions for this problem would be planting them in a raised position. Places like top of a flight of steps are more suitable as you can still enjoy the bloom at its best.

Mr. Stanley, Your comment, “Nature of the soil should not be strongly acidic. Meaning thereby, the pH of the soil should not be above 5.5. . .” is confusing. This tells me that the soil should not be above 5.5 pH which is towards the alkali side. What would be the lowest pH permissible? This would tell me what the most acidic level would be tolerated. Thank you.
