Coriander Herb
Questions & Answers (Q&A)
CorianderCoriander (Coriandrum sativum )appears a lot like parsley. Basic difference between the two is that the coriander is an annual. You will find coriander seeds easily available  in any garden store. Fresh coriander leaves are also available in the markets and they are more popularly known as ‘Chinese Parsley” or “Cilantro” . Coriander is one of the most widely grown herb plants around the world.

A typical coriander plant has one central flowering stem growing upward from a taproot. This central flowering stem could achieve a height of 40-45 cm even. Several other flowering stems also start branching out from this main stem.

Leaves of the coriander plant grow on the main stem and are oval with toothed edges. Some of the leaves though develop on the side branches of the plant and are quite delicate and lacy in nature.

Coriander flowers are small and have pinkish white colour. These flowers develop as cluster at the end of the flowering stem and are flat umbrella like shape.

Coriander is an ancient herb and we find its reference in various ancient resources including books, mythologies, the Vedas (Ayurveda), and the Bible. Even the Egyptians and the Romans used coriander for various purposes including preservation of food and meat.

Coriander FlowersCoriander herb plant is a sun lover plant and while growing this plant  in your garden you must ensure direct and bright sunlight exposure for sufficient time during the day hours. You also need to ensure moderately rich soil, which is light and is well drained to grow healthy coriander plants. If you are living in extremely hot regions, then planting the coriander in a partly shadowed space is more appropriate.

You can easily grow coriander from the seeds and during early spring, you will see the plants growing high. In case your purpose is to grow, coriander plants to have fresh leaves only then you should prefer planting them in a suitable container. These containers can be placed inside or outside as per your convenience. For this very specific purpose, you should harvest the plant when it attains a height of about 15cm.

If you have enough space in your garden then you may also have continuous crop of coriander by simply sowing new seeds every two weeks. Alternatively, you can pick a few young and tender leaves at one time as soon as the plant attains a normal average height of 12 cm. This “Pick the Young” technique works excellently for few months until the plant starts wearing out or becomes tough. However, you should stop picking young leaves when the flowers of coriander plant start blooming.

Mature coriander seeds have an extremely pleasant and aromatic, flavour and because of this quality, these seeds are extensively used in numerous recipes including potpourris, stews, sausage, pastries, and wines. Best time to harvest seeds comes during the mid summers. During this time, seeds generally ripe and the stem bends due to its weight causing the seeds drop off.

What is the herb "coriander" used for?

keep in mind, this is fresh coriander, like the plant. What and how do we use it for?

Answer:
Coriander is the dried, ripe fruit of the herb Coriandum sativum. The tannish brown seeds have a sweetly aromatic flavor which is slightly lemony. A zesty combination of sage and citrus, Coriander is actually thought to increase the appetite Coriander is used in lentils, beans, onions, potatoes, hotdogs, chili, sausages, stews, and pastries. It is used in the cooking of North American, Mediterranean, North African, Mexican, Indian, and Southeast Asian cuisines, as well as spice blends, including curry powders, chili powders, garam masala, and berbere. Cilantro is the dried leaves of the herb, Coriandrum sativum, an annual herb of the parsley family. Also known as Chinese parsley, Cilantro has a distinctive green, waxy flavor. Cilantro is the usual name for the leaf of the plant that is otherwise identified as Coriander, and from which Coriander Seed is obtained. Used in salsas, chutneys, salads, dips, beans, and soups. Cilantro is used in Asian, Mexican, Indian, Tex Mex, Caribbean, and North African cuisines, and is used in seasoning blends such as masala, curry, salsa, and recados. Use the cilantro leaves fresh, they don't dry or freeze well. Harvest the leaves before the plant flowers for best flavor. Use fresh as it does not dry or freeze well. If it is the seed you want, harvest when the leaves and flowers turn brown and before the seed scatters. Seeds have a bitter taste until they dry. They store well in a tight-lidded jar in a cool, dry, dark place. Enjoy!

Coriander Herb Question: 3

Can anyone tell me how to grow coriander i can grow everything else but always have no luck with this herb?

Answer:
I have sown it directly in the garden. I don't use the leaves, just the seeds, so I don't mind if it bolts. For several years now, it comes up by itself, I just have to watch for the seedlings when working that area. They resemble parsley. This is a mild moist climate, so maybe that makes a difference. If you want the leaves, I would advise sowing in succession and cutting off the flower stems to prolong the leafy period.

Coriander Herb Question: 4

Are there any herbs similar to coriander that can be substitued for it in recipes?

I have an allergy to coriander. I love Mexican and Indian cuisines, but most of the recipes use coriander. Is there something which can be used as a subsitute giving similar flavour results?

Answer:
Not sure if you are talking about coriander powder or leaves. You can try the dish without coriander powder and see if you like the taste. Or add a bit of cumin powder (not as much as the quantity of coriander powder) As a substitute for coriander leaves or cilantro, you can use curry leaves, which are used in most south indian dishes. They are available in many Indian Grocery stores and are a good substitute for coriander.

Coriander Herb Question: 5

Why do Americans call coriander cilantro?

"Coriander" sounds like what it is: a herb. "Cilantro" sounds like a pharmaceutical. What's the history of this wildly differing naming?

Answer:
Coriander is usually referred to the seed in America and cilantro (the spanish name) is the plant itself. Maybe because it is easier to distinguish between the two.

Coriander Herb Question: 8

growing cilantro/coriander herbs?

I have a cilantro plant that i bought about five months ago. I put it in a bigger pot and after a while it started to elongate. Now that it has flowered it has fruits. I was wondering two things, 1) if cilantro is an annual plant will it die then revive or will i have to get a new one, 2) do the cilantro fruits produce seed and if so can i use them to grow more cilantro

Answer:
Cilantro is the most difficult herb to grow because it is so short lived and it needs cool temperatures to grow well. Many people think that they kill Cilantro because it doesn't last very long when they purchase plants at their local nursery. Cilantro will bolt (send up a flower stalk) as soon as the roots get above 75 degrees or so. With the best conditions Cilantro will last about 8-10 weeks before flowering. Once it does flower, it will make seeds which can be harvested as Coriander or replanted to grow more Cilantro plants. Many people grow Cilantro by reseeding it every 3 weeks or so and have a patch growing all summer long. Planting it very close together shades the roots and helps keep it cool. Hope this helps :-)

Coriander Herb Question: 9

how do you grow Mint and Coriander at home?

I live in Bangalore , India. I have been trying to grow coriander and mint at home for the last 6 week unsuccessfully. The Coriander seed never seem to germinate in the soil and the mint cuttings (got from the grocery store near by) wilt and never root in the pot… Can you please tell me the right way to grow there herbs.

Answer:
Coriander is fragile and does not do well indoors! Plant in a partial sun and shade area so it does not wilt from heat or decay from shade and moisture. It requires well drained location. Mint needs to have roots, so either buy the plant at a nursery or put your cuttings in a glass of water until roots form. Then either take your new plant or your "starts" from cuttings now with roots, and plant in a VERY MOIST place in partial sun like half day. Most people grow mint by a hose valve turn on, because they often leak when you put a hose on and so the mint receives water even when you water elsewhere from the drip! Good luck!
