Cherry Tomatoes
Questions & Answers (Q&A)
Cherry TomatoGenerally marketed as ‘premium tomato’ the cherry tomato is simply a ‘mini-tomato‘. This variety is though similar but not exactly identical with the conventional domestic tomato. It is sweeter and gives a different taste to your salad dish.

Size may vary from thumb tip to the golf ball and shape could be spherical, oval, or oblong. Oblong ones are more towards the plum tomatoes and called as the ‘grape tomato’.

Cherry tomato is an engineered variety of cultivated tomato in terms of Botany. As usual, there are several varieties of cherry tomatoes you can choose from.”Super Sweet 100” and “Gardener’s Delight” are two most popular varieties of cherry tomato in the United States and the United Kingdom respectively.”Santorini” is a typical Greek variety of cherry tomato and is very popular because of its shape and flavor.

Cherry tomatoes require little attention while growing and could grow perfectly even without staking. They are more tolerant of dry climatic conditions and weather fluctuations. Cherry tomatoes are not prone to cracking and blossom end rot, which is a common problem with conventional domestic tomatoes.

Maturing and ripening period of the cherry tomatoes is very short and the plant start bearing fruits throughout the summer season and even up to the beginning of the fall season. If you are among those creative gardeners, you would certainly like to grow them indoor as well and thus you can have fruits throughout the winters as well. Cherry tomatoes varieties are immensely productive and one small plant may bear hundreds of fruits even.

These qualities of cherry tomato are sufficient for deciding them growing in your home garden as well. You will get a different flavor indeed.

Cherry tomatoes can be grown easily in a container with minimum care.”Sungold” variety would be the best if you want the juiciest and flavorful tomatoes in addition to the “Super Sweet 100″.

When planting the plants you must prefer using organic potting mix. Never take dirt from the garden. It will help you avoid pests and other diseases. Checking soil everyday and ensuring that it is dry with minimum requirements. You will have to ensure maintaining the soil moist continuously. It is better to place the container under direct sunlight for at least six hours a day.

Type of containers you are using also becomes very important. Normally plastic, fiberglass, and foam-based containers suit this plant better. These materials are helpful in delaying the evaporation of water from the roots. You may use any type of material based container but ensure that it has drainage holes in the bottom.

I advise you to start plantation from seedlings instead of the seeds directly. It will reduce your timings up to great extent. June is the best time to plant these seedlings and you not waste time anymore. Just go to the nursery nearby your area and get some good seedlings of cherry tomatoes.

I'd like to know what part of the country your in. In PA I plant just two cherry tomato plants about mid May and the produce starting about early July until the frost kills the plant in the fall. It may help if you keep ripe tomatoes picked off even if you have to give them away.

Cherry Tomatoes Question: 4

What can I make with Cherry Tomatoes?

Anyone have any good recipes that use cherry tomatoes? My garden is booming with them! Also, is it okay to eat them if they have a crack and split open?

Answer:
Bacon Stuffed Cherry Tomatoes * 2 pints cherry tomatoes * 1/2 cup mayonnaise * 1/3 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese * 1/2 bunch green onions, finely chopped * 16-oz. pkg. bacon, crisply cooked and crumbled PREPARATION: Cut the top off each cherry tomatoes, and using a melon baller or a sharp knife, carefully scoop out the seeds and pulp. Place each tomato upside down on paper towel to drain. Combine the rest of the ingredients in a small bowl.Stuff each cherry tomato with the bacon mixture. Chill in fridge for at least 2 hours to blend flavors. To serve, I like to line the serving tray with parsley to keep the little tomatoes from rolling around. It's very pretty too. Don't eat them if they have split open completely you never know it a bird has already pecked on it or not. After all you have a garden blooming with them.

Cherry Tomatoes Question: 5

Can you grow black cherry tomatoes in winter?

Hi, i recently grew black cherry tomatoes from seed but unfortunately didn't grow many. I have bought another packet of these which suggest the best months for growing are between february and april. I am wondering if there is any way i could grow them now, throughout the winter, even if it means i have to grow them indoors. I have got a conservatory which is unheated but will still allow the sun to get to them. Please help because these tomatoes are delicious! Thanks

Answer:
NO

Cherry Tomatoes Question: 6

Is it too late to plant cherry tomatoes? Can I plant them upside-down?

I want to plant Cherry Tomatoes in a homemade upside-down container. Is it too late in the summer to plant them (in north Texas)? If not, how can I make a homemade upside-down container for them so that I don't have to plant them in the ground?

Answer:
No its not to late in that part of Texas if you get a plant from nursery thats at least 3 months old. And the container I use is a 5 gallon plastic bucket, put holes in bottom of bucket for water purposes, plant it in there and cut lid for the plant to fit in, put lid on pull plant Thru, Hang upside down in a very sunny area, Water from the holes regularly, and watch it grow. By the way there great to grow this way bugs have a real hard time getting to them. I do 2 or three every year.

Cherry Tomatoes Question: 7

Why do my cherry tomatoes split?

When my cherry tomatoes (I think the stick said "sweet"--I dont' know if that's the variety of what; I got the plants from a co-worker) ripen, more than half of them are split open. It happens occasionally with the non-ripe, too, and once in a while with the larger "big boy" tomatoes. What gives? Is there anything I can do about it?

Answer:
most common reason is too much water. Irregular watering is supposed to cause the problem as well, but it's been my experience that it is from over watering. Here is a site that may help. http://gardening.about.com/od/vegetablepatch/f/TomatoCracks.htm

Excellent post, I’m overrun with tomoato plants at the moment. We planted to many seeds to close together so I have a thinning out project tomorrow.

Any tips for thinning out, it can be tricky from past experience. If we can save some and give them away then we’ll try that.

Do you know of anyplace that sells Santorini cherry tomato seeds? I love them, but my seeds got confiscated at customs (wrongly, I do believe, but you can’t argue with customs…). I’m in the U.S. and would like to buy some online if possible.
