Prayer Plant
Questions & Answers (Q&A)
Prayer PlantThe “Prayer Plant” as you might know is an amazing plant. Its behaviour will change in accordance with the passing of day. As the day starts approaching towards an evening leaves of the prayer plant would begin folding up slowly. The folding up is complete as it is complete dark.

When you get up in the early morning you will observe that the leaves of this amazing plant are also opening up. During the remaining part of the day it will keep on repeating same type of varied behaviour. But in case you observe that the leaves are staying up all along the day time then the plant is not well. You must understand that it is not good for the plant’s health and growth. Try to find out the reason for such behaviour. It may be because of insufficient light. If this is happening due to not enough light then you must consider moving the plant to a brighter and more open place.

I have learnt from my own experience and numerous experiments that light plays an important role in the overall health and growth of the Prayer Plant. You need just exactly enough light for this. Not less and not more. If the location is too bright leaves colour is more likely to fade with time. It clearly means that you need to keep experimenting with the right location. Try placing “Maranta” for spotting the best place.

Climatic condition is one more important factor. Prayer Plant in fact is more suitable for warm humid climatic conditions. Cold climatic conditions are normally not favourable for this plant. However, if you are living in the cold frosty climatic zones and like to grow prayer plant in your home then you need to be extra-careful. Never try putting the “Maranta” on the windowsill and close to the glass during winter season. The plant here will get cold fast and leaves would be turning brown on its edges.
I have come to know this fact after conducting several experiments with different locations. Like many people, I also thought that the brown edges are results of either under-watering or over-watering. But when I changed the location of the plant from windowsill to the opposite wall I got the best growing results. Right location also solved the problem of fading colour of the leaves. You must try experimenting with the best location in your home. Until then keep experimenting with different spots and always keep an open eye on behaviour of the plant.

Watering is another extremely important point and you must do it regularly. It will maintain the soil wet and thus save it from drying out fast. A definite level of moisture and humidity is extremely important. When you get up in the morning it is better to take some water (normal, and at room temperature) and mist it on the plant leaves. You should sometime give the plant a warm-bath under the shower also.”Marantas” would surely be happy with that.

Tropical soil mix is always suggested for planting and potting the prayer plant. You may consider adding some sericulture to this soil mix also. It will be more helpful in holding the moisture for a longer period.

How do I re-pot a Prayer plant?

I have a Prayer plant that needs repotting. I have repotted Prayer plants in the past but the soil seems to be too heavy to allow enough air to the roots, and they die or don't thrive. Any answers or suggestions?

Answer:
I have had the same prayer plant for many years. In the late winter and early spring it gets little white flowers. Generally about this time there will be new growth coming from the center of the plant. I cut of all the old growth at this time. Sometimes the leaves look pretty healthy that I cut off so one time I decided to try to root them in water. Wa la it worked! I did not have sucess with every leaf but have propagated a few plants this way. Mine has been in the same pot for a while with just regular potting soil. I usually take a fork and stir up the top soil (about an inch down) to prevent the soil from compacting. I do this with all my plants before watering them. Maybe try adding some vermiculite to the soil when you transplant that should make the soil a little lighter. Also may be try watering a little less. It is okay to let the soil dry a little in between waterings. Good-Luck!

Prayer Plant Question: 7

my prayer plant's leaves always turn brown around the edges, why?

then the leaves die, but the plant always comes back alive

Answer:
The Prayer Plant, Maranta sp. is a true jungle plant. The leaves on your Maranta are showing you that the air is too dry. It may also be stunted by now and it is running out of juice -- slowly. There could also be an infestation of spider mites, but you would see tiny webs if so. Mostly, low humidity is the cause of the crispy leaf margins and is a very common situation the poor Maranta finds itself. The best you could do for this creature is get it into a bottle garden were rain is common place twice a day. (Rain is simulated by being the condensation on the bottle's inside walls.) No condensation = no rain = humidity not high enough. Cheers

information on a "prayer plant"?

Answer:
Advantages: Unique foliage, Not poisonous, fold up at night! Disadvantages: Difficult to care for The Prayer plant (Maranta), also know as the Ten Commandments, has become a very popular houseplant due to its compact size and beautiful decorative foliage. The plants pale green leaves are marked with dark patches between the veins, which become darker as the leaf ages, and the underside of the leaf is a gray-green with hints of purple. In its native homelands of Brazil, Asia and Africa the Prayer plant grows as groundcover, spreading across the forest floor from one patch of dappled light to the next. At night the Prayer plant folds its leaves up together, resembling hands in prayer, thus its more common name. Although you will never actually see the leaves of your plant moving to do this, it is a strange sight when you first notice the bushy plant of an hour ago is now standing up straight and flat. The Prayer plant belongs to the Marantaceae family, which contains 30 genera and 400 species, of which 23 species belong to the Maranta genera. Of these 23 Maranta only three can actually be grown as houseplants, Maranta Leuconeura, Maranta Leuconeura Kerchoveana and Maranta Leuconeura Erythroneura being the most common. These plants can reach up to a foot in height, and the intricately patterned, blunt ended leaves grow to about 6 inches long. They also produce small white or light-blue flowers that gather at the end of long stems, but these are very rarely seen on indoor specimens in this country. Although the care needed by each of the different types of Prayer plant is very similar, they are each quite distinctly patterned and therefore easy to tell apart. Maranta Leuconeura, sometimes called the Silver Feather Maranta or Black Maranta, has very dark green leaves with gray-blue markings between the veins. ...
