Lawn Care
Questions & Answers (Q&A)
Lawn CareIt is almost the onset of June now and your lawn is waiting for certain specific attention. The grass in your lawn must have grown high by this time. It is perfect timing to know when exactly to cut this high grown grass of your lawn. Let us understand this extremely important aspect in more detail.First thing you must know about the lawn grass is its permissible height. In simpler terms you should know when exactly to cut it .It largely depends upon the variety of grass you are growing in your lawn. Maximum permissible height of the grass would be the prime factor in determining the most appropriate mowing height. For instance if you have the “Common Bermuda Grass” in your lawn then the appropriate height would range from 0.75 inch to 1.50 inch.

Should you cut the grass when it is at the minimum of its growing range limit? We recommend that here you should follow one principle that “it is always better to wait till the maximum height is attained”. In other words you should prefer to stay at the high end of the suggested heights. You may treat this as a “Thumb Rule” as well.

Grass HeightLet me explain the reason for such a recommendation. Waiting for the grass for a longer period facilitates the roots go deeper and the root system thus develops better. Strengthened root system will further help the grass to withstand the tough times including droughts and extreme summers. High end grass covers the ground well and provides a covering to the soil also. Soil thus does not get dried out fast and permits the grass absorb more direct sunlight.

Cutting the grass when it is low in height will result in to a week root system development. The grass will dry out fast and you will be required to care and maintain the grass with many efforts. General health of the grass is also affected this way. If the grass is cut too low then it receives just sufficient sunlight and this is more favourable for weeds to germinate and get firm roots in the soil.

Grass cutting at the maximum height has one disadvantage also. The taller lawn grass may develop a problem of thatching and you need to care for de-thatching or seasonal aerating of the grass. Thatch is actually a collection of grass clippings, dead stems, and other soil debris which firms up near the ground level of the grass.

Thatch is a real problem indeed and in case it is accumulated in large amount it may interfere with the watering and fertilizing of the lawn. You will have to learn how to de-thatch or aerate your lawn in a proper way. Alternatively, you may also prefer to hire commercial services of such service providing companies. You can also avail the free lawn analysis offered by several of such companies. A little search on the internet will facilitate you locating a better company functional in your area.

Best Grass HeightWhen cutting the grass in your lawn you must know that the maximum cutting limit is 1/3rd of the total grass height for one mowing. You should adjust the cutting height of your mower blade according to this limit only. If you are cutting the grass after a long break then better reset the mower blade height accordingly so that it does not cut the grass for more than 1/3rd of its total height. Once you have completed first round of mowing this way you must hold it and wait for a fortnight. Resume the mowing after this time and cut the grass again so that you cut it up to the normal permissible height.

If you understand all these steps well you will certainly be having lovely grass in your garden and lawn.

Lawn Care Question: 2

lawn care>?

i am in ma. my lawn is in pretty bad shape. when should i seed? when should i put down the scotts product that prevents crab grass? in which order?

Answer:
Competition is the key. ( Had the same problem ) Regularly spread plenty fresh new and good seeds here and then ( don't keep your bag for next year or the seeds won't be as good ). If it's pretty in bad shape, cover potions of your land with 2-3 inches of top soil, spread the seeds, dont walk for +/- 2 weeks and it will be all green ... with some crab grass indeed but just remove them. The fundations are there.

Lawn Care?

I fertilized my lawn a couple of months ago with chemical fertilizer....it was in hot months but i did it early in tthe morning before it got hot...anyways...it killed my lawn...some of it...well i cant get it green...what can i do....should i put more fertilizer since the hot days are over...maybe it will turn it green...what can i lose its already dead? Any suggestions?

Answer:
Hi: There are a couple of possibilities for you to think about. You might have put too much fertilizer on and this could kill the grass. Also, if it wasn't properly watered through the hot months, this can damage any lawn. I recommend to my clients when this happens to rent an aerator and aerate your entire lawn. You can rent an aerator at most rental places. This hand held equipment is a round tank with spikes around the tank. You fill the tank with water and push it around your lawn. This will put tiny holes in the soil. Over seed and stay on a good watering schedule. This should help. It is not unusual to fertilize in the spring and fall seasons. If you plan to fertilize now, I would purchase a six months nitrogen slow release. Just use a samll amount. I hope this has helped some and good luck to you. Lawn Care Question: 4

Lawn care...?

Our lawn has a lot of weeds, so much that once I kill them, I'll need to put seed down to grow new grass just to keep up the green color. What would be the best way to attack this situation? (Our dog isn't allowed in the front yard where the problem is, and we have no kids)

Answer:
For several years I kept buying weed and feed thinking it would kill the weeds and make the lawn flourish. NOT!!! All it did was fertilize the weeds. Then I tried hiring one of the Lawn Maintenance companies. They'd come and spray, and spray, and spray... and the weeds continued to flourish. They told me I wasn't watering the lawn correctly. I have a sprinkler system....HELLO!!! It was set to their recommendations. I quit the company... What I did, was I got some 10-10-10 fertilizer, and pelletized lime (I live in the south). Per the recommended spread for my broadcast spreader... Guess what...I've had two landscape companies stop while I was out in the front yard and ask me who is taking care of my lawn! They wanted to know what I was doing to make it so thick and GREEN! The 10-10-10 will not burn anything. It's okay if it gets in the flower beds. My trees are growing like crazy. Even their leaves are bigger, fuller and healthier than any ones on the block! The lime just balances out the PH in the soil because of the pine trees. The weeds.....they didn't have a chance once the grass was properly fertilized!!! Good Luck!

Lawn Care Question: 5

Lawn Care,?

I have tryed and tryed to master my flower bed with now luck is there any help full websites or should I just pay someone? Everything I plant dies, looks bad, or just look good. Any helpfull sugestions?

Answer:
Read, Read, Read. That is how I got successfully started with my gardening. Also, there is alot of trial and error involved. Some pants I can grow well and some I cannot. It depends on how much you fuss with your garden. When you buy plants they have tags in them to tell you how much sun, water, etc. The internet is full of information or plants, soil, etc. You could hire a landscaper to help you get it started but I would be as much hands on as possible. That way you can learn what to do and reap the rewards or a beautiful garden!!!

A great post. I find that alot of people do not know how to maintain a healthy lawn they just cut it once a week. This blog really does give a good guide of what to look for and take into account.
