You have a garden and a little space as well. Garden is a place where you and your family would sure love to spend few minutes or a couple of hours and have a cup of coffee while enjoying free time. You may also like to have a chair in your garden and would like to read daily newspaper or some favourite book of yours. A friend of yours would surely love to talk to you while sitting on your garden bench also.
There are umpteen shapes, sizes, designs that you may think of. If you visit garden store you will find so many types of them. But the first thing you will be required to do is to decide upon what exactly you want in your garden and will it be suitably fitting in to the garden landscape or not.
Why not make your garden bench yourself?
You may not have even thought of it in past but be assured you can make it on your own. You do not have to be an expert in this art.
Let us device a methodology and few basic steps that would certainly lead you to have a nice bench in your garden and you would love to sit with your beloved on it while sipping coffee.
To begin with the processes concentrate on second hand materials only as we will not use anything that bears more cost. You may find some old posts which would serve as perfect legs for the bench. Similarly fence palings could be used for seat of the bench. Try to find two to four clamps that would be better for holding the timber fence pailings together. You need some metal strappings, a good hammer, and some nails also. You can easily put the strapping on with the help of these tools. Notching the posts would be easier with the help of a mallet and chisel.
The idea is to spot the right and suitable materials, collect them at one place and prepare all you necessary tools to start constructing a bench.
It is very simple to start with constructing. First of all start with clamping the timber fence pailings together at one end with maximum possible tightness. One they are clamped well measure the distances. Point out the middle of the pailings and put a visible mark there. Take small pieces of wood which can be used as spacers. Ensure that all these woods are similar in size and thickness. Place all these woods between each of the pailings and give it a perfect shape. Do not forget to protect your fingers and hand while doing this. It is better if you are able to give it a bow shape. This will give you a ship-feel. You may have your design as well.
Having placed all the pailings in proper way squeeze them together and clamp their ends tightly. Do not keep the clamp close to the pailings ends. You must have sufficient space for nailing the strappings. Once you have finished with this step turn the pailings over. Now you will see that your bench has started taking shape.
Here comes the height aspect in picture. You must have a fair idea of the most appropriate height which should also be very much comfortable in sitting. Better take a few sets of measurements first. Normally a bench height of around 400 millimetres would be sufficient. When you have decided the exact height mark the corresponding end grain of the timbers with exact height and width. Now you can notch out an area on both the posts. At this stage you can go for nailing the strappings.
One end of the clamped pailings would be required to slip in to the notched hole in such a manner that it fits perfectly. Repeat the same process with the other also and fit it nicely in to the hole.
Finally, have holes drilled for a couple of dowels. Put screws to hold the pailings in place. Now you can remove the clamps so that the pailings would expand in to the notched hole.
And thus you have made a lovely bench for your own garden. You did not even spend more than ten dollars for it and you invested just one weekend only.
Isn’t it a great project!
