Over the years, you learn the costs of doing things the wrong way. Most people don’t realize the kind of harm they are doing to their bodies until it’s too late. Once you develop chronic pain, it’s very hard or impossible to return to your original condition without expensive therapy. A small amount invested early will pay huge dividends in reduced medical costs. That’s why I am a proponent of ergonomic gardening.
Let’s face it. We spend a lot of time doing work in our gardens and in our homes without realizing the toll it takes on our bones, tendons, and muscles. I remember when I went from feeling absolutely strong and healthy, to suddenly having a herniated disc in my lower spine (where a spinal disc bulges out) causing serious chronic nerve pain, and painful carpal tunnel syndrome from using my wrists in improper ways.
Don’t let it happen to you, trust me, from personal experience it is not worth it. If I could go back 20 years, I would have spent the extra money on ergonomic tools as well as creating a healthier balance between work that strains the joints and muscles and relaxing time off.
If you haven’t heard of them already, Radius makes all kinds of ergonomic gardening tools: from small trowels to large shovels, rakes, knives, gardening shears, and much more. They look really strange, but if you read any of the reviews on Amazon, you’ll see how great they are. The worst thing to do is keep using poorly designed tools until you hurt yourself and end up with hundres of dollars in medical bills and unnecessary pain.
I wish you well in your gardening endeavors!
Your gardening friend,
Bill Stanley
