Garden Sulphur
Questions & Answers (Q&A)
SulphurThere are selected chemicals and organic compounds which are quite helpful in gardening and “sulphur” is one of them. Gardeners across the world have been using this chemical compound to address various gardening problems since many years. Sulphur finds multiple uses in gardening. If you know this fact then you will possibly find a little more information and if you are new to this chemical substance then it would be very useful information.

Sulphur generally comes in tow distinctive grades. Here is an account of both these grades of sulphur and their specific applications for various gardening related aspects.

Dusting Grade Sulphur

This grade of sulphur is a finer quality and fine-grained variety of sulphur. In gardening, it is best for controlling ‘folia fungi’ on various plants including pumpkins. Warm, wet, and humid conditions generated by its use also help growing the powdery mildew.

Dusting SuplhurYou should apply the dusting grade sulphur gently over the leaves. Ensure that the leaves are completely dry when applying it. Dusting sulphur is also extremely helpful in controlling mites. Over the years mites have developed resistance for many types of chemicals. On the contrary, mites have not been lucky enough to develop a resistance to dusting sulphur and therefore it is more effective even today.

Powdered Grade Sulphur

Powdered Grade Sulphur is coarse-grained variety of sulphur. This grade of sulphur is almost completely safe to use. Its application makes a long lasting effect on the plant’s growth. It is always better to apply the powdered grade sulphur in two stages. Once prior to the rains and then apply it again after the rains.

When applying this sulphur you must take full precautions with the temperatures. If the temperature rises beyond 30 degrees its application could be harmful as the sulphur would cause burning of the plant leaves. Therefore use of this sulphur is never recommended during hot summers.

It is possible to turn the soil in to more acidic in nature with the application of this grade of sulphur. You should be careful while doing this. Apply this sulphur with one handful per square meter. It is the standard rate for gardeners. Once you are done with spreading sulphur with this rate you should sprinkle over the soil and then rake it. Such treatment would be effective for almost one year onwards. You can easily plan out some good plants suitable with acidic soil like heaths, heathers, grevilleas, rhododendrons and gardenias.

More Applications

Sulphur is very useful while taking cuttings of fleshy plants like Cacti, Succulents, and Begonias. Sulphur also gives a healing touch to the plants and prevents the rot fungi from germinating. It increases the probability of the plant’s survival.

Powdered Dusting SulphurWounds are generally more susceptible to rot. You can prevent that with the help of sulphur. Expert gardeners have advised that you should take the damp ends of the wounds and dab them in sulphur. Having done this treatment you may easily insert them in the propagating mix. Experts also suggest that a conventional method is extremely effective even today. In this method you can apply powdered sulphur directly on the bulbs and rhizomes. This technique is very useful with plants like dahlias and Gladiolas.

Sulphur thus proves to be a great natural product with its helpful qualities for several gardening purposes. You can derive many advantages with its practical and effective use in your garden as well.

Garden Sulphur Question & Answers

Garden Sulphur Question: 1

Will sulphur lower the Ph of my soil?

Will applying sulphur to my garden be a benefit or will it lower the Ph of my already acidic soil? Will sulphur help all plants or only some?

Answer: 1.
Yes, sulphur will lower the PH of your soil... but adding sulphur will not help all plants.
Make sure you test your soil to see how acid it already is before adding any sulphur ...or you could harm your plants... especially the alkaline loving plants (which need a higher PH) ...&... it can even harm acid-loving plants if you lower the PH too much.

The soil pH value directly affects nutrient availability. Plants thrive best in different soil pH ranges. Azaleas, rhododendrons, blueberries and conifers thrive best in acid soils (pH 5.0 to 5.5). Vegetables, grasses and most ornamentals do best in slightly acidic soils (pH 5.8 to 6.5).

---- Soil pH values above or below these ranges may result in less vigorous growth and nutrient deficiencies.
The major impact that extremes in pH have on plant growth is related to the availability of plant nutrients or the soil concentration of plant-toxic minerals. In highly acid soils, aluminum and manganese can become more available and more toxic to the plant. Also at low pH values, calcium, phosphorus and magnesium are less available to the plant. At pH values of 6.5 and above, phosphorus and most of the micronutrients become less available.

Keep in mind that the application of fertilizers containing ammonium or urea speeds up the rate at which acidity develops, & that the decomposition of organic matter also adds to soil acidity.

Aluminum sulfate will change the soil pH instantly because the aluminum produces the acidity as soon as it dissolves in the soil. Sulfur requires some time for the conversion to sulfuric acid with the aid of soil bacteria. The conversion rate of the sulfur is dependent on the fineness of the sulfur, the amount of soil moisture, soil temperature and the presence of the bacteria, therefore the conversion rate of sulfur may be very slow and take several months if the conditions are not ideal. Both materials should be worked into the soil after application to be most effective.

If these materials are in contact with plant leaves ...they should be washed off the leaves immediately or a damaging leaf burn may result. Take extreme care not to over-apply the aluminum sulfate or the sulfur.

Don't use the sulphur on areas for plants that like alkaline or chalky conditions such as poppies, cornflowers, chamomile, lavender, rosemary, bay and fennel. These do better in alkaline soil. Likewise, plants from the chalky prairies, such as echinacea, lisianthus and rudbeckia, prefer thin, lime-rich conditions.

Answer: 4.
You need Lime .
Answer: 5.
Yea, I think lime would be the best thing to use. I'm not sure if sulphur will work.

Garden Sulphur Question: 2

Giant Destroyer for moles - How smelly is it?

I have a small garden space with mole runs everywhere. I stomped them all down and am waiting for a new mound, so I can find the main run. I want to use the Giant Destroyer sulphur bomb. My question is, how long does the smell linger for? My strata refuses to do anything about them, but would probably frown on the use of chemicals. I will do it in the morning when no neighbors are around. But will the smell give me away even a few hours later?

Answer: 1.
The sulfur based vertebrate products burn for only a few minutes and do release a noticible smell and smoke, downwind. After about 5 minutes however, everything is cleared out, especially if there is any wind at all.
Answer: 2.
Aren't you s'posed to bury it? So no smoke should be coming out.

Good luck. I've never tried it. I just use bait on my gophers.

Try the castor oil sprays that you soak into the ground. That only smells while you put it down, and not much. Repells them nicely.

Garden Sulphur Question: 3

Making liquid manure?

For a few years now my kids have been digging manure from under the neighbours superfine merino ram shed and i have been delivering at great expense all over the countryside.I have the machinery and the knowledge to grind this manure and other components such as blood and bone, lime, gypsum, magnesium, phosphorous, sulphur and trace elements into a very fine paste which would be diluted into a liquid fertilizer.I need to know if this would be of any use in the garden?I am hoping to put it into 5 litre tubs so the kids can sell them for pocket money instead of me carting over a ton of manure in bags 60 miles each week. The machinery i need is just laying in the paddock at the moment gathering dust and i need a new hair brain project to go on with. steveWe get this manure for free, all the kids have to do is crawl under the shed and dig it out.It builds up to a depth of 3 feet over about a year and is just like black clay at its lowest level.I am in touch with a flower and strawberry grower and she will experiment for me.Our first tubs will be mixed to order for a lady who grows prize winning orchids, she is going to experiment also.As we can only mix small batches at a time of around 100 kgs in my totally sealed grinding mill all our mixes can be to order. We will adjust mix to what ever is requested and if we can get a kilo for the concentrate the kids will be swimming in ipods and mobile phones steve

Answer: 1.
It sounds as if it would be of great use in the garden. One problem might be the strength of the liquid which might burn expensive plants. You would need to experiment I think on your own garden or disatisfied customers may well be driving 60 miles to somehow pay you back.An old way of making liquid manure was to suspend a bag of manure in a rain barrel. The resulting liquid needed to be heavily diluted,so be careful with your mixture.
Answer: 2.
Yes. Great for the garden and for house plant. Commonly refered to as compost tea. Good luck to the kids!
Answer: 3.
Yes it would be excellent fertilizer, but if the manure is fresh it would need to be applied earlier in the season. Another thought to keep in mind is the cost of the tubs and the instructions on re-hydrating it to a usable mixture. But with fertilizers so available today, you may not be able to compete well enough with the companies which mass produce similar products to cover your own expenses.

Garden Sulphur Question: 4

Is this good compost for my flower garden?

I bought 6 bags of compost, it contains peat, compost, and loam. its npk rating is 0.02 - 0.03 - 0.02. i usually use miracle grow once every 1 or 2 weeks. and also it has calcium 0.15, magnesium 0.08, and sulphur 0.037. its 100 % organic also:) does this sound good? thanks in advance!

Answer: 1.
i wouldn't use that... nitrogen just kills everything and it is full of it... stings the plant.. i was told to use 20 part of compost to 80 percent top soil or soil prep... but then again, i just realized you said compost not meneur... i still would mix it at least half and have with the above... just to be safe..
Answer: 2.
It might be ok. I, however, just use organic compost.

Also, there's nothing organic about miracle grow. It's quite the opposite, and is bad for the soil.

Garden Sulphur Question: 5

I NEED to get rid of these snakes and i need help?

I was in my garden to day and i saw a young gardner snake and i want it GONE. i know there has to be more then just that one because it was a younger one and it had to have brothers and sisters. I would perfer that i didnt have to see them to get rid of them so i have found some solutions i would like to know if they works. 1) snakeaway 2) lime and sulphur ( is this deadly to my pets ) 3)sulfur ( also could this harm my cats and my dog? )

Answer: 1.
Actually, they are called "garter snakes." If that's what you have, they are very good. They eat bugs that harm your garden. They are just another one of God's creatures, and my thinking is just enjoy them. They are absolutely harmless to you, and will help make your garden healthier. Certainly healthier than sprinkling harsh chemicals all around.
