April Garden Flowers
Questions & Answers (Q&A)
Home Gardening TipsFor an active gardener each month of the year comes with specific tasks. Several activities including the new ones will have to be accomplished in that particular month.

Here are some of the home gardening tips which will certainly be helpful for you.

  • April is the month when you must prune the spring-flowering shrubs as soon as they are finished up with blooming.
  • First fortnight of this month is very much appropriate for sowing the seeds of Bush, Lima, and Pole Beans, Pumpkins, Radish, and Squash. You should ensure at the same time that the planting beds are sufficiently moist facilitating good germinating conditions for the seeds.
  • Closely related crops or the same crops should not be repeated in the same place in your garden. Plants and crops belonging to the same family should also be avoided as far as possible. For instance, Broccoli, Brussels sprouts, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Kale, Radishes, and Turnips all belong to the same family. Instead, you should opt for different crops that are not related with each other in any way. You may try Radishes in the place you grew Black-Eyed-Peas last year.
  • The Gladiolus plant corms every week during April and May months. You can also plan out a succession of summer blooms in your garden with these plants.
  • This is the best month for sowing certain specific plants and crops. Some of them include cantaloupe, cucumber, Mustard, Okra, Sweet Corn, Black-Eyed-Pea, Pepper, and watermelon seeds. Sweet Potatoes could also be sowed in the month of April.
  • If you want to extend the flowering season a little more then better eliminate the spent flowers on annual plants. It will help you a lot.
  • In case you observe black spots on roses then treat the plant and flowers immediately with backing soda spray.
  • If you have Azaleas in your garden then fertilize them during April because it is the time when they will finish blooming. Select an organic flower food or a suitable chemical fertilizer which is fit for Azalea. Ensure proper watering subsequent to fertilizing the plants.
  • If you an inclination for growing herbs in your garden then April is ideal for some of them. Plant herbs like Dill, Spearmint, Italian Oregano, French Tarragon, Sweet Basil, Rosemary, Sage, and Rhyme.

For growing herbs bright sunlight exposed locations are more appropriate. You should learn growing herbs well in advance so that you can avoid committing common mistakes. For instance some of mints are good looking and beneficial as well but they are invasive. So if you are planting such mint plants then better confine them to a pot or wide-spreading space so that its invasion doesn’t affect other plants.

  • During April weeds and other undesirable plants grow as well. It is the favorite season for them as well. You should keep a constant vigil on the vegetable and flower beds in your garden and pull immediately the weeds so that they do not grow further.

Desirable plants in your garden thus would get sufficient water, nutrients, sunlight, and proper space to grow.

  • You may also consider planting the container-roses, perennial flowers, warm-season flowers like celosia, Impatiens, Periwinkles, Portulaca, and Zinnia in this month.
  • You must take care of aphids during April. Be cautious particularly on the tender new growth. Better use water for blasting the little pests off in order to safeguard your plants.
  • To all the landscape beds and vegetable beds it the most appropriate month for adding compost. Addition of compost will enrich the quality of soil further. Mulching of beds also becomes very pertinent during this month. Mulching with compost or any suitable organic material will ensure maintaining moisture.
  • If your houseplants have gone overgrown then better re-pot them. Select an inch larger pot which is also an inch more in diameter than to the previous one. While transferring the plant in to the new container you must ensure that the depth of the soil is one -inch below the container-rim. Keep the same depth while re-planting them also.
  • Clean your houseplants with spray, cloth, water, or a hand-held -shower. Be gentle to the leaves while cleaning them.
  • Birds in your garden always make the surroundings pleasant. You may like to leave a couple of feeders open and filled with a variety of foods. Create an additional pond of bird-bath with a defined shelter with bird-houses or trees and shrubs. Birds not only please your mood but also eat up the insects fed on plants. So love plants and birds equally.
  • When the April month approaches an end you should also start planting warm-weather grass like Bermuda in an open space of your garden. It will always remind you the April pleasures.

April Garden Flowers Question & Answers

April Garden Flowers Question: 1

When to start planting outdoors in Central Virginia??

I live in Central Virginia, and I am very, very eager to get out there and start planting!! I've put some pansies and begonias out and they're doing well. I am potting an herb garden, and some daisies, random flowers, and veggies. What if I potted them, brought them outside during the day and in at night until the end of April? Or is the beginning of May better? Please help before I run and stick everything in the ground tomorrow- haha.

Answer: 1.
Wow, you've got the gardening bug bad! Me too.

We both have to wait until the last frost date, mine in April 14th. Go here for your date:

April Garden Flowers Question: 2

When is the best time to start a garden?

We are in Spring, almost April, when is the best time to start a garden?? what kind of flower seeds can i buy that will grow every year without re-seeding again?

Answer: 1.
depends where you are at. usally when the danger of frost has gone.
Answer: 2.
I started mine last weekend but I live in an area not prone to frost. If you do live in an area where frost is prevalent, check to see when the last frost date is and start it after that. I would seek seeds that yield periennal flowers because they come back every year. I am more of the instantaneous gratification gardener so I buy the flats or small container plants so I have an immediate garden and don't have to thin seeds or wait for germination.
Answer: 3.
Check the internet for a Planting Calendar in your area. Most states have an Agricultural Extention Service with offices throughout. Check the telephone book. Good luck.
Answer: 4.
Here is nifty site that tells your last frost date for your zone. http://www.hgtv.com/hgtv/pac_ctnt_988/te... Hope this helps.
Answer: 5.
I start my garden around mothers day and i live in Utah your local garden shop should be able to tell you when and what to grow in your area annuals only grow 1 year perennials grow for more then one year so if you want it to come up every year look for perennials
Answer: 6.
I suggest to start planning your garden in the winter. You have lots of time to think about how you want your garden to look, what kind of garden you want, when you can actually start tilling, cleaning, & planting it. Do you want plants & flowers to climb, do you want low growing plants, do you want fruit that you can pick and eat or make jelly or wine out of.
There are endless possibilities when starting a garden. Annuals only grow for one season, perennials come back every year, bi-ennials flower their second season.
Check out the links below to get more ideas of what you would like in your garden.
Answer: 7.

Answer: 8.
Probably May 1. If you have a sunny area, grow coreopsis, shasta daisy, and galardia from seed.

April Garden Flowers Question: 4

I live in Albuquerque,NM and we're planning a party on April 5. I want our garden to look its best.?

Which perennials or annuals should I plant and how soon can I start planting? I would prefer flowers and low maintenance plants. We installed a 15X10 Syn Lawn in the middle of the backyard. The front and both sides of the backyard are now ready for plants and a drip system was also installed for 20 plants.

Answer: 1.
Hi:
Besides annual and perennial flowers there are a lot of evergreen shrubs you could plant that will give you some nice color and texture for you April 5th party. Your climate zone is seven and I am also in zone seven. A lot of these evergreen shrubs are low maintenance and could really dress up your area on either side of your lawn.

One thing to think about is blending your plants specimens with your color scheme of any outdoor features or your house colors. (your siding, brick, shutters,etc...)

Here are a few suggestions:

Chinese Pizazz or Loropetalum - dwar is the Ruby
Mop Cypress
Globe Arborvitae
Azaleas (great spring bloom)
Indian Hawthorn
Gardenias

I will link you to the gallery of plants section of my website. This has a variety of pictures of shrubs as well as trees, annual and perennial flowers. There are brief descriptions as well as climate zones. This may help you get some ideas for you beds.

I will also link you to the site map as this page has everything that is on the website, Browse through and you may get some tips or techiniques on planning - prepping and planting your landscape area. Think also about doing some outdoor features such as a bench, bird feeder or bird bath. A small fountain adds such a nice touch to a garden.

I hope this has helped some and if you need any further suggestions, please feel free to contact me at the website. Good luck to you and have a great day and a wonderful party!

April Garden Flowers Question: 5

Wedding Flowers?

I am getting married in April and am searching for my flowers. I have gone to Los Angeles (the flower district) and have found a place called "Daisy's Garden" This place doesn't have a website and they speak Spanish (some English, but not very well)....I went with my friend and the florist showed me beautiful flowers and arrangements for much less than what I would pay at a typical...non-wholesale florist....i was wondering if anyone has been to "Daisy's Garden" before...or any florist in the LA flower district...and, if so, what was your experience with them? (please only tell me if you have used them for a large event...not just for a bouquet or something)my second question is....do you think i should trust the great deal in LA...or pay more for peace of mind??? Thanks!

Answer: 1.
consider the hidden costs and stress of delivering and setting up the flowers on your big day
also the built in guarantee that goes with a reputable florist actually coming through with the exact flowers arranged the way you are wanting at a time when you won't be having time to mess with it.
set your preferred budget for flowers total.
Rather than a wholesaler please check into a smaller florist they can give you the attention you need to have at this important event and they can help you not break the bank at the same time.
Answer: 2.
i would want to pay more for peace of mind
Answer: 3.
the best way to do this is to get 3 estimates. then go with the middle one...unless they are way different. in that case get 3 more.

i have a feeling the mexican woman is being fair with you though. find a fried that speaks spanish, take them, and go back for another visit.

hope this helps. :)
